Has anyone actually bought K40 from the Kodak in Hollywood? My wife called the other day and they said they were out of stock of K40 -- she forgot to ask if you can request the carts with the numbers someone posted on another thread -- or would it be safe to just ask for carts that expire in 2005? If they are going to order them from NJ or wherever, would it be safe to assume that all of the carts will have an expiry of 2005 or is that a special request they would honor? Kind of a stupid question, I know, but I am about to shoot a ten minute short on April 20th and don't want the entire film screwed because of the stupid jitter prob.
Also, where the hell is the Wal Mart around LA -- somewhere in the Valley, right? Hanxth?

I bought 10 carts from kodak in Hollywood, and out of the 6 or 7 I've shot since, I've only had one bad cart (on my vacation
There's a Walmart off of Tampa located near Northridge (I believe it's Porter Ranch?)
Ive never had a problem with them.

Thanks, Scott.
I did a little investigating and found all of the Wal-Marts within a 50 mile radius of West LA -- it's not such a bad situation --
here's the long link:

Also, I spoke with a woman from Kodak/Hollywood - they are completely out of K40 until next week! She couldn't order any for me directly because I don't have an account. Man, I hope they get them in or I'll have to shoot in b&w again...

You say black and white like it's a redheaded stepchild. I actually think shooting Plus-X is more fun in general than even K40. I'm I alone on this?
Anyway, I still have some fear of using Wal-mart as the middle man for processing. Is there one in the L.A. area that does this often enough that it won't confuse the people in the photo dept.?

I tell ya what, if you guys despirately need some film, I will sell you what I have left (I think I have four rolls) for exactly what I paid with the discount...that's if you are really desparate.
BUT
if possible, I would advise to wait for the new batches, I already had one bad roll out of 6, and plan on taking it back for a new one. I could really hear the film inside cartridge jumping around and knew **** well that registration was going to a be motherf*@#er.

Ive processed close to 50 rolls using Walmart, and never had a problem. Yes the employees don't know about super 8, but all you have to do is tell them it was a 2 week send out, or hand them your stub, easy as that. If you want to spend the extra cash on Dwaynes and the shipping costs, be my guest, peace of mind for some people.
And no, they don't ship it to Fuji, it goes straight to Dwaynes via UPS priority just like Pro 8mm and many other places.
Drop it off on a Thursday and it will be back no later than the following Friday. Ive received my film back in less than 4 days before. If you need it back in a hurry, by all means Dwaynes it the way to go
I think of it as this, the money I save helps me buy more film.

Hi Scott! Did ya really got a blocking cart, showing that knocking noise... until the camera recognized "film end" right in the beginning of the film? Two times I had one of those beasts, not knowing about the prob. I took?em out of the camera and beat?em very hard to on the floor, but they did not run anyway afterwards. So I pulled the film some inches by hand, and afterwards they finally rolled! But I can tell ya man, I really got pissed by the result! Picture jumpin and bouncin like after two bottles of whiskey! That was the initial blocking problem, that had been followed up by the jitter problem!

The people in the photo department won't know anything about it -- they only do the in-store one-hour processing. For Super8, you fill out a form, put it in a bag, and drop it in the drop-off slot. Then someone comes by and loads everything in the slot into a truck and hauls it down to Fuji in Scottsdale (or other regional developer). Fuji then sorts the 35mm and slides from the Super8, and they take all the Super8 and put in in a box and ship that over to Dwayne's in Kansas. Dwayne's processes it expertly and ships it back to Fuji, who ships it back to your local Wal-Mart. The guys in the store will never hear about it.
Actually it's rather amazing when you think about it -- the more people you involve in the process, the lower your cost goes. For example, if you send it to Dwayne's, it'll cost $9 (last I checked). If you send it to Fuji, they'll send it to Dwayne's and Fuji charges you about $8. If you give it to Wal-Mart, they'll send it to Fuji who sends it to Dwayne's, and the grand total cost is under $5.
If you want the best service and the quickest turnaround, and the least opportunity for hiccups in service, skip the middlemen, pay the extra dough and send it straight to Dwayne's (also known as K14movies.com, I think). If you want to save a lot of cash and don't mind the various middlemen, and especially you save even more because you don't have to pay shipping costs, then drop it off at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club...

8th Man,
I usually use Plus-X exclusively -- I love it-- this thing we're shooting in a couple weeks will be the first production I've ever done in color -- which is why I'm trying to find out everything I can about getting film (if I can get 15 rolls) and how cheap it is to process. Apparently the WalMart Scott (Hanxth) uses is in Porter Ranch, the North-west part of the Valley and it hasn't given him any grief. I'd like to try the one in Panorama City a little closer...
